The NAAFI Fund recently awarded a £17,500 grant to NATO in Shape, Belgium to give their community spaces a much-needed makeover! This project was all about creating a centralised, welcoming space for the British Military Community, and we’ve been blown away by the feedback.
We all know how vital a strong community is, especially for our serving personnel and their families. These grants are all about providing a little bit of home, away from home. And that’s exactly what this project is set to do – creating a welcoming, vibrant hub for everyone to enjoy.
We were lucky enough to get some amazing insights from a community member who has already been enjoying the refurbished spaces. They shared just how impactful the changes have been:
“The improvements to the Community Facilities have been amazing,” they said. “From creating a fantastic bar area that works well whether it is a small event or a larger wider group with thoughtful touches like table games and coat hooks on the sides of tables, to a more relaxed quieter area with sofas, a coffee machine and board games”
One of the key parts of this project was giving the under-5 play area a much-needed refresh. It’s wonderful to hear how this has created a safe and stimulating environment for the community’s youngest members. The user told us:
“Parents of young children have peace of mind that the under 5 play area is a safe and stimulating environment… The garden at SHAPE House has been open and very much enjoyed by the under 5s and the feedback from parents has been so positive about the impact on them and their children and has left them feeling valued and that they have their own happy space to use.”
Belgium’s weather can be a bit unpredictable, so we’re especially pleased that the new outdoor furniture is ready for anything! The community member highlighted how this has made a huge difference:
“The addition of more weather resistant outdoor furniture with the unpredictable and often wet weather in Belgium allows the community to utilise the outdoor space when the opportunity does come with good weather.”
We’re so proud to have played a part in bringing these enhanced facilities to life. This project is a perfect example of how the NAAFI Fund helps create spaces where our serving personnel and their families can truly connect, relax, and feel at home.
