Brunei’s NAAFI Wagon team were today presented with the BFBS Lockdown Hero Gold Award for helping the community during lockdown. After 457 days with zero Covid-19 cases, the country entered a strict lockdown on 8th August when cases were discovered. Restrictions included the closure of all restaurants and recreational facilities, allowing limited numbers in supermarkets and letting no more than two family members leave home at any one time.
The NAAFI Wagon offered daily support to British Forces Brunei throughout the period, stopping at every possible area where the community was living or working and also provided a home delivery service. With families having to stay at home and not interact with those outside their household, the NAAFI Wagon team were often the only friendly faces they would see.
Mike Collins, Trading Manager in Brunei said: “The NAAFI Wagon was a major support and ray of sunshine for our community throughout lockdown. In particular, it was a lifeline for those dependants whose partners were away as many don’t drive and children under the age of 12 were not allowed in shops. I’d like to congratulate our drivers Ally, John, Norian and Masliana on this well-deserved award and for lifting people’s spirits during this challenging time.”
