Frequently Asked Questions

Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes.

NAAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes) was officially established by the British Government on 9th December 1920. This crucial organisation was formed through the merger of the Expeditionary Force Canteens (EFC) and the Navy and Army Canteen Board (NACB).

It was founded after WWI to create one permanent, unified organisation to run the catering and recreational establishments for all three services.

Our main purpose is to provide real-life support, including retail, catering, leisure facilities, and welfare services, to the UK Armed Forces and their families worldwide, serving as a 'taste of home'.

In short... yes!

NAAFI are the MOD's internal capability for Total Facilities Management, Real-Life Support and Infrastructure.

All surpluses are reinvested back into supporting the Armed Forces, either as Welfare Returns (direct financial contributions to units) or through the NAAFI Fund for welfare projects.

A "NAAFI Break" is a common term in the Armed Forces for a short break or rest period, preferably involving a cup of tea or refreshments from a NAAFI canteen, shop or wagon.

NAAFI was granted the right to use the title "Royal NAAFI" in 2022 by Her Majesty The Queen, in recognition of its over 100 years of service and its close links to the Monarchy and the military.

The NAAFI Fund provides funding for welfare projects that enhance the quality of life for serving personnel and their families. By 2030 the Fund is aiming to give back £10million to the UK Armed Forces.
