I served for 13 years in the British Army as an Engineer Logistic Specialist within the Royal Engineers. My role was all about the movement, supply and management of engineering equipment and materials. We handled everything from plant and bridging assets to construction materials, which played a crucial part in enabling various operations and projects. During my service, I deployed on numerous operations and exercises, taking me to places like Afghanistan, Cyprus, Canada and across the UK.

Why I Joined The Forces

From a young age, I always knew I wanted to join the Army. I was looking for a career that offered challenge, structure and purpose, and the Army truly delivered on all fronts. The chance to travel, develop new skills and be part of a tight-knit team really appealed to me. The Army gave me a clear path for both personal growth and professional development, and I honestly believe I wouldn’t be the person I am today without those military experiences.

Adapting to Civilian Life

I’d be lying if I said adapting to post-Forces life was easy. I’m happy to admit that I still have moments where I struggle. Leaving the military was definitely an adjustment. You go from a very structured, team-oriented environment to something that’s much more self-directed. I had to find my feet and figure out how my military skills translated outside the Forces. But once I realised the value of the experience I’d gained — especially from working in challenging environments against tight timelines — I was able to approach civilian life with more confidence. It’s also given me an opportunity to share those valuable military skills in a civilian setting.

Habits Carried Forward

A strong work ethic, discipline and resilience are all habits that have stayed with me. I’m still very much end-goal focused and thrive in a team setting, always looking out for those around me. The ability to stay calm under pressure, which I developed during my service, is something that continues to serve me incredibly well every single day.

Why NAAFI?

NAAFI was a natural fit for me because of its strong connection to the military. It’s a way for me to stay close to the Armed Forces while directly supporting those who are currently serving. Knowing the demands of military life, I truly value the role NAAFI plays in offering a bit of comfort and normality – something I personally benefited from when I was deployed on operational tours.

Supporting Serving Personnel

It’s hugely rewarding to now be on the other end of service with NAAFI, knowing that I play my part in supporting current serving personnel. Having been in their boots (no pun intended!), I understand how important those everyday moments are — whether it’s a quick chat over a brew or seeing a familiar face. Working with NAAFI allows me to give back to the community I was a part of for so long. It truly feels like I haven’t left the mission behind — I’m just supporting it from a different angle now.
