We’re absolutely thrilled to announce the completion of a deeply meaningful project, made possible by a grant from the NAAFI Fund.
We were delighted to award £5,095 to A Squadron, Queen’s Own Yeomanry in York to transform a forgotten corner of their welfare facility. What was once a disused bar annex and storeroom—a completely unutilised space—has been reborn as something far greater: a vibrant welfare/games room.
The refurbishment project sought to tackle a common issue on many units: unused space with enormous potential. The Squadron saw an opportunity to create a hub for relaxation and socialising. Our funding of £5,095 was the final piece of the puzzle, allowing the Squadron to complete the renovation.
But this isn’t just any games room. It is now officially known as ‘The Blue Room’.
This new welfare space is a profound and lasting tribute to Cpl Neil ‘Blue’ Goodwin RAMC, who was, by all accounts, the very heart and soul of the squadron.
Cpl Goodwin—a proud Yorkshireman—was a true pillar of his team. He was known for his incredible kindness, deep compassion, and unwavering generosity; the sort of person who would genuinely “give you his last quid without hesitation.”
The creation of The Blue Room ensures that the values he lived by—friendship, camaraderie, and selfless support—will continue to thrive.
Captain P G Griffiths, Royal Signals, said “The Blue Room has become a hub of connection and shared experience, ensuring that Blue’s legacy lives on in the bonds we build and the memories we create together.”
This space is a physical manifestation of team spirit. It’s a place where new friendships will be forged, old stories will be shared, and the bonds that make military life meaningful will be strengthened daily. This room reflects the very best of the Armed Forces community and acts as a constant, positive reminder of a beloved teammate.
Projects like The Blue Room, which combat isolation and strengthen unit cohesion, while also honouring a respected team member, truly embody the spirit of giving back.
A huge congratulations to A Squadron, Queen’s Own Yeomanry for completing this magnificent project. We couldn’t be prouder to have played a part in helping ‘Blue’s’ generous spirit live on.
