Welfare in High Definition

NAAFI Fund delivers £6,000 grant for New Gaming Hub as 33 Engineer Regiment Goes Digital
16/01/2026

A recent £6,000 NAAFI Fund grant awarded to 33 Engineer Regiment EOD&S (Explosive Ordinance Disposal and Search) has allowed the unit to transform a space at Carver Barracks, Wimbish, into a state-of-the-art gaming hub.

While it looks like a lot of fun, ESports is quickly becoming a powerhouse in the British Army for some very practical reasons. This new suite isn’t just about high scores; it’s about:

  • Teamwork & Communication: Coordination is key, whether you’re on a digital battlefield or a real-world operation.
  • Strategic Thinking: Mastering complex games requires rapid problem-solving and tactical planning.
  • Digital Literacy: Engaging with modern tech keeps serving personnel sharp in an increasingly digital world.
  • Welfare & Relaxation: Most importantly, it’s a space to decompress, meet friends, and enjoy some well-earned downtime.

The impact hasn’t stopped at the barracks gates. The suite serves as a valuable welfare facility for families, providing a modern, welcoming environment for the wider Carver Barracks community to connect.

We were delighted to hear from Capt Joseph Lynch, 33 Engr Regt (EOD&S), who shared how the new facility is being received:

“The ESports teams from 33 and 35 Engr Regiments (EOD&S) love our new ESports suite. It’s made a real difference to the Serving Personnel here. Thanks to NAAFI for delivering the capability on camp to get involved in one of the fastest-growing sports in the military.”
