We’re always looking for ways to bring a bit of extra “spark” to life on base and this grant was no different – a £2,000 NAAFI Fund grant awarded to the British Army’s 7 Battalion REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) in Wattisham!
The mission was to upgrade their welfare facilities with a high-tech twist. The NAAFI Fund grant enabled them to install two professional-grade table tennis tables, full equipment sets, and – the star of the show – two table tennis robots! The new robots allow personnel to train solo, improving their reflexes and hand-eye coordination even when a partner isn’t available.
It might look like just a game of “ping-pong,” but for the REME team, it’s a vital tool for staying sharp. Between demanding shifts and complex engineering tasks, these tables provide a much-needed “active break.” Whether it’s a quick five-minute rally or a lunchtime tournament, it’s the perfect way to switch off from the stresses of the hangar.
From Craftsman to Colonel, everyone is equal at the table and it has been a fantastic way to build camaraderie across all trades and ranks. The tables haven’t just been for the Serving Personnel though; they’ve been a massive hit during family days, bringing the whole Wattisham community together.
As always, a special thanks goes to our partners at Decathlon. To ensure the unit got the absolute best value for their grant, we took advantage of our exclusive supplier discounts, meaning the Project Lead was able to stretch the £2,000 much further than retail prices would allow.
