Woodland transformation In Wattisham

Woodland transformation In Wattisham

This year, the NAAFI Fund contributed £20,000 to Wattisham Flying Station to help them turn neglected woodland on base into a brilliant environment for the whole community to enjoy.

The idea came during the summer 2021 national lockdown, when station staff had the rare opportunity to explore parts of the 1,072-acre base that would normally be out of bounds due to airfield restrictions. The Wattisham team saw how much the outdoor areas were enjoyed and decided to transform a piece of land with funding from the NAAFI Fund and other organisations.

In Park Wood, an unused woodland area, they developed a series of walks for those in the community to exercise and socialise in, along with ‘Trim Trail’ fitness zones with a variety of exercises for all abilities. BBQ and picnic areas were built for outdoor socialising and wildlife and nature zones created to educate personnel and children about local flora and fauna.

Wattisham Flying Station Local Command said: “Access to wonderful outdoor spaces will help our mental and physical wellbeing and we’re very grateful that the generosity of the NAAFI Fund and our other supporters has allowed us to transform this space. The park is incredible and has fostered a stronger sense of belonging in the community.”

Mrs Clare Morrin also commented “Wattisham is located in rural Suffolk and this developed outdoor space is welcomed by the families as it provides them with a much needed location to relax and spend time together”.

Although the planned phases of the project have been completed, Wattisham Station staff will continue to manage and develop the area, adding additional areas, zones, and facilities for future generations to enjoy.
