NAAFI Fund Supports Green Growing Initiative

The NAAFI Fund has provided funding to D Squadron, The Queen’s Own Yeomanry to support their ambitious Green Growing initiative. This project aims to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly growing location that will provide fresh produce for the entire base.

The heart of the project is a commitment to sustainability. The use of solar will enhance the growing facility and recycled water will be used for irrigation.  Additionally, the project will focus on regenerative food production practices, which aim to improve soil health and biodiversity.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the Green Growing initiative is also intended to foster a sense of community and responsibility among the service personnel. By actively participating in the growing process, individuals will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability and the impact of their actions on the environment.

The project is expected to have a significant impact on the base, providing fresh, locally grown produce and promoting a healthier lifestyle for all service personnel and their families. It also serves as a model for other military bases, demonstrating the potential for sustainable practices to be integrated into everyday life.

Project Sponsor, Captain Mark Hey said “With the support of NAAFI funding we have been able to utilise the recycling of materials, with fresher and more cost-effective/longer term proposals.  We are seeing the benefits from mental wellbeing to team building, in terms of how this particular project is literally growing in enthusiasm and support. I encourage everyone across all services to invest in such an amazing and generous scheme provided by the NAAFI.”
